“Grey’s Anatomy” (And Amazing Arizona) – Part 2

Most importantly – even if I was so on board with their relationship, this is the big issue: Arizona lost her leg! (And Callie was the one who told doctors to cut it off.) I have been amazed by the Grey’s Anatomy writers staying so true to Arizona’s trauma. In television, people tend to get over things quickly. But Arizona has been dealing with her leg for quite a while now, just as she would in real life!

How long do you think it would take you to get over a missing limb? ‘Cause for me, I’m pretty sure I might never get over it. It’s your leg! It’s how you dance, run, transport yourself, and on and on. Sure, you can do those things with a prosthetic. But I bet it takes a lot of time to get used to it. And I doubt it ever feels absolutely 100% the same.

So, she’s dealing with this insane trauma, and on top of that, this incredible lack of trust now embedded after Callie let doctors take Arizona’s leg.

Blah, blah, blah, it was to save her life. Yeah, Yeah. We’ve heard Callie say that a lot now. But, emotions aren’t always logical. That’s just not how humans work. And Arizona is scarred.

She started as a wonderful, nearly perfect person. We have had years to fall in love with her. So, we know what she was like before. And that love we’ve built up for this character over the years should allow her some grace and some time to sort through all of this.

However, from everything I’m reading, it doesn’t seem like fans are giving her an inch! But why not?

I know these are only TV characters. But, they are supposed to seem like real people to us, and I’m gonna go ahead and talk about them as such for the purposes of this post.

Jessica Capshaw (the actress who plays Arizona) knows what’s up.

Is Arizona not allowed to be human? Do we completely abandon people at the first sign of a meltdown (no matter how warranted that meltdown is)? I mean, geez. Remind me not to be friends with 99% of the people commenting on Hulu since they seem to have no sense of compassion.

Also, it’s not like Arizona fell into bed super fast. She had this other wonderful, brilliant person now after her. And she resisted, and resisted, and resisted until finally she had a moment (okay, longer than a moment) of weakness.

I thought the whole thing played out very honestly and organically.

And while of course as an audience we’re not going to totally root for a marriage to fall apart (although we might if it’s not set up as a good marriage in the first place (Christina and Owen, much? (and obviously this Callie/Arizona one as well)), are we really going to be that upset when two unhappy people can possibly be happy apart?

Apparently! Because all the fan comments I’ve been reading are anti-Arizona. All of them! How is this possibly such a one-sided issue?

I do not understand why public opinion is the way it is on this storyline. Do you have any thoughts on it?

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
