Finishing out this little series on getting organized, now that we know all the changes in my room, I just thought I’d touch on how I got there.
I’m sure everyone has different strategies and ways they go about organizing and decorating (or at least semi-decorating, which is what I’ve done). But for me, this is how I did it.
I started by taking everything out of one of my closets. (We each get two here – plus a hall closet.) Anyway, I emptied out one of my closets (the easy one, in which the main thing is clothes). And I only put things back in that I knew I actually would use and keep. I gave away some clothes. (As soon as I felt I had enough to give away, I’d take a trip or mail things out. I know it might not have been the most streamlined process. But I was about getting things out that didn’t need to be in there.
In addition to clothes, I organized papers and anything else that were in there.
Sure, it made my room kind of a mess. But it worked pretty well (and made me want to hurry up and get everything organized so my room wouldn’t be such a mess). And then I just started going about my room (and various areas – bathroom, my little hallway), piece by piece.
When I realized I had enough stuff that didn’t have a place, but that I wanted to keep, I went out and got another set of drawers or another binder or whatever I needed.
Now, this probably resulted in more trips to Target than I would’ve needed to take had I somehow mapped it out ahead of time. But I felt I was learning as I went. And I didn’t want to wait ’til the very end, because once I saw enough things that needed a place, I wanted to give them a place and be done with it.
Had I been really going for a particular look, that may have been a bad idea. But all I wanted to keep the budget on organizing as low as possible while getting as much done as possible. So, I was fine with little plastic drawers from Target.
When it came to the little bit of decorating I’ve done, I definitely could’ve tried to plan that more. But I just went and saw what frames were available. Then I thought about the pictures I had. Then I just bought some frames with general ideas in mind and tried to put the puzzle pieces together.
So, there you have it. Nothing earth-shattering or life altering. Just piece by piece until it was finished.
As I’ve said before, I’m sure it could be organized even more so. But I know where things are. I feel generally de-cluttered, like I don’t have a ton of stuff just hanging out that I’m not gonna use. And it’s a great feeling. I actually feel like a physical room was even easier to do than my computer… But we’ll get to that soon enough.
