Is There Any Better Television Character Than Dr. Christina Yang?

May 21, 2014

I know I’m behind in a few different stories and that there are some other things to talk about, but now that it’s been almost a week since the finale, I say we talk about this.

I love television. I really love it. And there are some characters who touch me in a special way. I adore Lisa Simpson and want to be just like her (which is why I picked the saxophone back in middle school, and why I decided to join Mensa).

I am totally obsessed with Leslie Knope. In my dreams I am like her because I like to think I’m totally driven and crazy and over-the-top, while also being a sweet person who thinks of others and remembers things about them, working hard to make lives better of the people around her. She’s what I think is the best version of me – the one I strive to be like every day. And if anybody ever tells me I’m like her, I take it as a ginormous compliment.

We could talk all day about other incredible, amazing television characters (such as Mary Tyler Moore, Elaine Benes (or really even Christine Campbell to some extent (golly, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is wildly cool)). Heck, we could even talk about the other women on Grey’s Anatomy.

But then there is Doctor Christina Yang.

I love Grey’s Anatomy – totally love it. And while of course I love Meredith (and love Arizona even though some things don’t always make sense to me with her), and love other people on the show (but not some!)… I loooooooooove Christina.

She’s Christina.

There is something so spectacular about seeing someone have such a deep, true passion for something – and not only a passion, but a gift. She’s the best surgeon there is. (Yes, I know she’s fictional. But in that universe, she’s the best.) And this season has been phenomenal with her ups and downs leading her to her big final send off. (I might cry just thinking about it.)

I know the title of the post seems as though I’m going to break down all of the things that make her wonderful, but she’s Christina. I don’t think I even need to delve too far into her drive and intense-ness and brilliant-ness. She’s Christina Yang, and she’s practically exactly the kind of person I dream of being.

I only use the word “practically” because I like to believe I’d never fall for Owen… But I could! We all have flaws, we all make mistakes – even, apparently the Christina Yangs of the world. And perhaps that’s what makes her so perfect after all – the fact that she’s not completely perfect, but even in her super-human-ness has human flaws.

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
