Some Of The Greatest Love Stories

May 25, 2014

Christina and Mer 1

I finally got that Sex and the City post out of my drafts because the one right after it built off it and started like this:

While we’re taking about Sex and the City, I wanted to just mention that seeing that show reminded me that the best true love stories that are ever told are about the closest friends.

The love those girls hold for each other… there’s nothing more precious, sweet, special, selfless, loving than that.

I read once from one of the writers on Grey’s Anatomy – maybe it was even Shonda Rhimes – that the show is truly a great love story… One between Meredith and Christina.

I know that most people would expect someone to say between Meredith and Derek. And their love is great, sure. And they had some dramatic moments that made for interesting television. But at the end of the day, there is nothing like Meredith and Christina.

I don’t know if you’ve been watching Grey’s lately, but their fighting is tearing my heart apart. I mean, I think they’re ramping up to Christina leaving the show? But it still hurts. Ow.

I don’t think that I view love stories in the same way as many viewers do. (I guess we all probably see them a little differently though.)

I think it’s possible that I’m a little too based in logic. Even on Parenthood, I think – I think – I was supposed to be sad when Amber and Ryan broke up. Right? I mean, Mae Whitman really gave her all in those scenes, bawling her eyes out like a champ.

And even editing it without the audio of hearing someone crying… I think it was made in a way that was supposed to make us feel sad…?

Christina and Mer 2But I’ve been wanting them to break up forever! To paraphrase Taylor Swift, I knew Ryan was trouble when he walked in.

And I get it that it’s so easy from the audience perspective to see that someone’s not good, or at least not right for someone else.

But if you’re actually in the world (yes, I understand they’re characters, but if we imagine their relationships are real), then again, as I said in the post yesterday, love is not logical.

I wonder why it’s so utterly non-logical. My understanding is it has to do with dopamine, and it’s sort of an addiction that people compare to cocaine?

Anyway, even I get swept up in the non-logicalness of characters sometimes. Who didn’t want Rachel and Ross to end up together?… Even if they did break up a million times in the process.

Basically, I just remembered being really intrigued when I heard the writers of Grey’s were looking at it as a great love story between Christina and Meredith. And I think it’s really opened my eyes in other TV shows. Do you have any favorite love stories?

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
