Auditioning for the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop! – Part 2 (Songs I Applied With)

September 21, 2015

Picking up from yesterday –

I put my ballad in that post, and here are the other songs I auditioned with.

Up tempo:
Set-up: After being in an on-again, off-again relationship with someone she loves, they broke up, mainly because of Anna’s career. Then she had a heart attack (unrelated to her break-up, but the timing sucks for her). In this song, we learn her career is now being taken from her too. (So, she gave up something, but now she has nothing at all.)

(Lights up on ANNA in a hospital room,
surrounded by flowers, stuffed animals, etc.)

[Song: “I’M ALONE IN HERE”]

ANNA
ENGULFED, SURROUNDED,
SMOTHERED BY EVERYONE’S SUPPORT
YET NOT ONE PERSON
HAS SHOWN HIS FACE INSIDE OF THIS “RESORT” [she says sarcastically]

THE BEEPS AND DINGING
RINGING INCESSANT IN MY EAR
I HAVE FAKE FLOWERS,
FAKE FRIENDSHIPS, REALLY I’M ALONE IN HERE.

Am I maybe living my life with the wrong priorities? …No.

I AM NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE SOME BIG REVELATION
JUST ‘CAUSE MY HEART QUIT
THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE
DOES NOT DICTATE HOW YOU LIVE IT.

IT’S SHELVED, I’M CANCELLED
THROWN OUT, NOT TO BE ON TV
THEY SENT AN EMAIL
AND THAT’S HOW MUCH THESE PEOPLE CARE ‘BOUT ME

Comedy:
Set-up: It’s the beginning of relationship of two people who seem meant to be together. This is the next scene after their first date.

(Lights up on ANNA in her bedroom.)

[Song: “WE HAD FUN, RIGHT?”]

ANNA
WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST NIGHT
HE HASN’T TEXTED YET
WE HAD FUN… HE HAD FUN, RIGHT?
HE’S JUST ASLEEP, I BET

TWO O’CLOCK, STILL HAVEN’T HEARD.
I GUESS I WASN’T FUN?
WAIT A SEC. IS THIS ABSURD?
COME ON. IT’S JUST DAY ONE.

I COULD SEND A LITTLE TEXT
WHAT COULD THAT BE HURTING? [She sends a text.]
WAIT, DID THAT COME OFF AS MEAN?
OR DOES HE KNOW I’M FLIRTING?
MAYBE I’LL JUST SEND ONE MORE
SO THE AIR CAN GET CLEARED
SHOOT, HE HAS A COUPLE NOW…
SO, DOES HE THINK I’M SO WEIRD?

(Lights come up in DAVID’S office.)

DAVID
WE HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST NIGHT
HUH, 10 NEW TEXTS. OH WOW.
WE HAD FUN… I HAD FUN, RIGHT?
OH LOOK, SHE’S TYPING NOW…

[*note on this one: I hated that I made the girl the one who got in her head and texted a million times. I felt that that was so cliche, and I genuinely do know guys who get more in their heads about it than girls I know. So, I just felt gross playing into women stereotypes.

But, I left it as a girl because for one thing, I thought the whole nervous energy thing would be fun for a girl to play. Secondly, I just wanted to be straightforward. I mean, I guess it is better to take chances, but I dunno. It was dumb. The decision was dumb. But I still got an audition.

I did bring this song to the audition, but I flipped the roles – righting my wrongs, baby!]

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
