So, we were around LaPaz for most of the time in Mexico. And you could swim with the whale sharks! BUT you could only do it in season, and the season was ALMOST over by the time we all got there.
So, on one of my first days of work, during a break, I was calling around boats and places that would take you out with the whale sharks. One of my co-workers overheard me and asked if he could come along, as we shared the same day off.
And heck yes he could come along!
This is how I started being known as kind of the ‘party planner’ of Mexico who always knew something to do on people’s day off, and I wore that badge with pride!
So, anyway, we found a place, and we went out with the whales!
Now, I know this is insane because of how much of my life I lived in California, but I didn’t know how to swim, until I was preparing for this trip [which will come up in another post when we get to scuba diving].
And I had never been in the ocean before!
So, it definitely felt a little overwhelming just jumping in the water like that. And at one point, a sea lion came out of nowhere. And you can hear my give a little ‘yip’ on the footage, because it scares me a bit [although later, the motto of Mexico became, “I am not afraid.” So, like… let’s pretend I wasn’t scared!]
And it’s hilarious watching the video back, because in real-time, the sea lion seemed so close, but in real life on the video, I was gonna be fine.
We had a grand time. Whale sharks are so giant and magnificent. And I’m glad we got out there before it was too late!
