Maybe Vegans Are Right

When I was eating well
When I was eating well

In the “year of responsibility,” I wanted to get more responsible about my food.

I thought one way I’d do that is explore options more toward veganism. (As we may or may not remember, I have to do six months as a vegetarian stepping down to a vegan sometime before mid-2018 or I owe one of my donors to my Broadway Impact fundraising page over $1,000.)

Now, I don’t cook. I’ve never cooked. I’m probably never going to cook. Yeah, people can change. But it’s not something I’m passionate about. It’s not something I want to do. I want food I can just eat.

Oftentimes, I have microwavable meals full of preservatives and such. I never thought much of it until I looked for alternatives to how I was going to start eating.

I knew if I was going to go vegan, most likely, I’d need a meal delivery service. I mean, come on. How else was I going to do this? Then I found Pure Market Express.

It’s a raw food delivery service. All the food is based around fruits, nuts, and vegetables. There’s no refined sugary, dairy, meat, preservatives, or even gluten.

And, she shapes the foods in ways I’m familiar! It might looks like I’m eating pancakes or cookies. But really, I’m eating fruit and stuff.

(I started doing this a couple of weeks before the Cory Booker thing and weight was coming off pretty easily. So, if you thought I looked good there (and I thought that was the best I looked all year), then you were seeing me when I was eating raw foods.)

I didn’t love everything I got in the shipment, but I loved enough that had I stuck with it, I think I could’ve found enough to keep my pretty sustained and happy since you could pick and choose your meals.

(This particular delivery service decided to stop doing delivery. The woman who ran it is now teaching classes instead. I’m a little devastated, ’cause some of their stuff was so good! I’m thinking about trying this place now.)

I’m a huge skeptic of well, basically everything that has to do with food. But I felt awesome eating that stuff! Because it was expensive, I did continue to eat some other things. But I mainly just supplemented with salads. Though, I will say, once or twice a week, I had a salad from Chipotle with barbacoa or steak.

No matter how much protein I’m eating, and even when taking iron supplements, I can’t stop feeling a need for at least a bit of meat. I don’t know why that is. I don’t know how to stop it, or if I’m supposed to stop it. But, there’s that.

I also liked eating those salads with meat because I like to eat things that are warm! On the raw food plan, you’re not supposed to use the microwave. At first I thought it was silly, but I can’t argue when I’m feeling great and dropping pounds.

Ultimately, I will say now that I’ve become more mindful of my eating, when I have a lot of dairy (especially cheese) or a lot of meat, I feel it. I feel kind of bleh and full – like way too full – and just sort of heavy.

So, I’m not a full on vegetarian/vegan yet. And I may never be (outside of that 6-month challenge that I’m still pretty determined to finish). But I am exploring options. And meal delivery with possibly a bit of supplementation here and there seemed to help me a lot, and it seems like an option I wouldn’t mind doing again (but more seriously, and for a longer period of time).

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
