I Have Climbed The Mountain Of Digital Photographs! – Part 5 (Naming Conventions)

February 14, 2014

Picking up from yesterday –

I was lucky that I did have many places where I could kill some time by going through photos. I used to commute to Burbank everyday, so I had a good amount of time on the train to whip out the laptop.

It was interesting to me the different emotional rides I went on as I sorted the photos:

“I will never be able to finish this.”
“Wow, this is going faster than I imagined! What will I ever do with my rides home once I finish this?!”
“Wait, I found another huge folder – I will never finish this. Uuuuuuuugggggghhhh”
“I am so happy I’m doing this! I feel lighter and freer!”

So, sometimes it seemed like the greatest, most possible thing. Sometimes it literally felt like it was impossible to finish.

I will say as I went along, I learned that some of my naming conventions were horrible. For one thing, when I’m in a photo with other people, I should always list the other person first! If I want to sort by name to find all the pictures of say, Daddy and Aurora or David and Aurora or whomever… it doesn’t help when every single photo starts with Aurora!

Also, many photos didn’t even start with “Aurora.” Most started with the word “me.” Then, after I started uploading things to Facebook, this blog, and wherever else, I came to realize that when people click on certain things, they can see the way I named it! I used to think that name was basically just for me (maybe that was naïve or stupid), but no. Everyone can see it.

So, I’ve tried to rename everything using my name now instead of just “me.”

Speaking of names that people can see, sometimes I labeled photos something like “cute face, but weird body” – not realizing everyone would be able to see that!

Also, what’s funny about things like that is that I’d label it that way, and months later I’d go back to look at it to upload it somewhere or whatever. While skimming through photos, before even looking at the label, I’d say think something like “oh, nice body position, but weird face.”

Then I’d look at how I’d labeled it, and think, “What? How did I have the exact opposite feeling about this before?”

So, perception is weird, I suppose.

Hopefully I actually successfully changed the naming conventions of everything on the internet. However, I don’t really know. It’s possible somewhere deep in my Facebook or Flickr or wherever, you’ll find me making weird comments about myself… But whatever. You’re thinking your own little comments. I’m sure it’s all fine.

I’ll continue with more on photos tomorrow.

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
