Political Sex Scandals

June 20, 2016

I’m just going through some of my old posts when I don’t quite have something to say on the blog. And here’s one I had sitting around now that I thought why not post? xoxo

Yes, another rant. I told you some would be coming.

Why am I ranting so much lately? I don’t know! Maybe I’m cranky (and that crankiness is holding over). Maybe I’d been so busy this year that I didn’t have too much time to comment about things in the media.

Now that I’m not working or traveling for as many races, I feel like I’m drowning in media! I know I don’t have to watch and listen to everything… but I do.

So, why not share my opinions about things on the blog? Someday when I’m running for Senator, people will at least know where I stand on everything!

So, political sex scandals.

They were mentioned in reviews of 2012. They were mentioned as we said goodbye to a bunch of members of Congress last week. One was also mentioned in a show available only on Hulu called Battleground. There is some excellent acting going on in the show. (That was only show Ben Samuel’s ben on, and he was amazing! (And he’s certainly not the only great actor on the show.) But Battleground is really beside the point…)

Here is my stance on these. I don’t care about them!

Truly, I do not care.

We lost an awesome Representative – Rep. Anthony Weiner – from the House because of a stupid twitter scandal!

Of course I don’t think it’s right for people to cheat on their spouses. And it can be argued that sex scandals show a person’s character. But these people are human, are they not?

Humans make mistakes. Humans are always growing. Humans have flaws, ugly sides, and personal lives! That’s the thing that gets me. These are their personal lives.

Yes, when you’re in the public eye, the line between a personal and a private life is much more blurred. And in the case of Anthony Weiner, when you’re doing things over social media, that makes it more “public” as well. (Of course he was so not the only case – not even close – even if we only count the last five years.)

But the point is, even if a person’s personal life has bled into his or her public life, it’s still his or her business. Can we never just let someone be? If it’s not affecting job performance, do I really care if someone trying to make change in Washington DC has a messy personal life? I do not.

I also think it’s awful how the media blows all of this stuff up. Once something catches, it seems like it’s all we hear about! And it never seems like the important things catch. Drama, affairs, scandals – these are the things that spread like wildfire. (I have another post tomorrow kind of related to this internet craziness, so I won’t get too into it here.)

Stephen Colbert said it better than I ever could. (If someday that link unfortunately expires, it is a segment from his show on Thursday, November 15, 2012.) I just watched that clip again, and it is so freaking brilliant! Especially very soon after 2:55, he says something perfect.

So there you have it. In case anyone wanted to know (and probably no one did), for all sex scandals from the past and in all the future – be it a Democrat, Republican, or member of any other party who’s in trouble – I do not care. I don’t care if it was a man or a woman and if he or she was with a man or a woman. I just don’t care.

Please, it’s so hard to get good leaders. If a leader makes a human mistake, can we just recognize that he or she is human and move on?

I'd love to hear from you! So whaddya say?
